Casa Alhambra

Residential, Historic Preservation | Coral Gables, FL

The design of this home builds upon a historic residence in Coral Gables originally designed by Phineas Paist, reinterpreting its Mediterranean character through a lens of lightness, landscape, and continuity. Constructed in the 1920s, the home’s original material palette—including Dade County pine flooring, clay tile surfaces, and coral rock elements—is preserved and complemented through a series of measured interventions that enhance its architectural clarity.
The approach reinforces the home’s historic identity while allowing new layers of space and experience to emerge.

The composition is organized as a sequence of volumes and open spaces that unfold beneath a dense canopy of green, allowing architecture to dissolve into its garden setting. Covered thresholds, deep overhangs, and layered facades create a soft transition between interior and exterior, while living spaces extend outward into shaded terraces and landscape. Openings are carefully calibrated to bring in filtered light and frame views, maintaining depth and texture throughout. The result is a residence that feels both timeless and renewed, where architecture, history, and landscape are experienced as one continuous environment.
