The design of this home is rooted in a careful balance between preservation and expansion, responding to both the historic fabric of the original residence and the evolving needs of contemporary living within the Morningside Historic District. A Mediterranean archetype, the existing home is reinterpreted through a 2,000-square-foot addition that reinforces its architectural language while introducing a new layer of spatial organization. The intent was not to compete with the original structure, but to extend it—allowing the home to grow in a way that feels cohesive, measured, and enduring.

The project is organized around a central courtyard that becomes the primary ordering element of the plan. Programmatic volumes are arranged to frame this open space, allowing living areas to extend outward and engage directly with light, landscape, and air. The courtyard operates as both a private retreat and a social anchor, where patterned paving, water, and lush planting create a layered and immersive environment. Through this approach, the architecture unfolds inward, establishing a continuous dialogue between interior and exterior spaces.
